Discobox < > Dérive. Sound. Debauchery.

From the moment we wheeled the Martin system 1/2 mile down the road from the Hackney Empire, it looked like it would be special. Clues were there when we plugged in the Bozak. We watched the locals get far too excited at the drinks offered we had secured for our faithful. Climbing over people to get to the DJ booth and there was Serge 'man he was good'.

Here is the data, chopped up into CD length segments for convenient burning and listening to in your car, boat or plane....

Blearyica.

There has been alot said about all this Nu Bleary Ka Kak. I found this tape by Graeme Park from 89. Now alot will argue that this aint the Balearic. The nostalgia is mythical as i can only really remember the likes of Tony Wilson (South Londons finest, Fascinations) only dropping into what Ebay calls Balearic classics at the start of his night. He would of got lynched if he started dropping Soho Hippychick half hour into a £25 pound yellow callie.
Enjoy.

Dub Dérive @ The Dolphin.

Two weeks ago at our weekly night at Ze Dolphin. I was approached by a character called Shaqqy who does house clearances and had acquired some vinyl and asked "did i want it?" "Of course" was my instant retort although visions of Seekers and various brass & accordian players ran through my head. The collection I was given brought to mind very real ghosts of Hackney past. He walked through the crowd peering over the top of 90 or so Dub 12s dating from 1978 to 1981. All in mint condition apart from the classic DJ vandalism of scratching out Song titles and President Hi-Fi scrawled in permanent ink on the covers. My knowledge of this era has never been that good. I used to deal in some reggae vinyl in my record stall days in Camden but tended to concede defeat to the dub hounds that used to fleece me every Saturday morning for 12 years. So i did a bit of research and the only sound system i could find similar was Sir Bigga the President from Hornsey (Papa D). I did find an interesting list of the reggae sound systems round my way from back in the day.

"Fatman Hi-Fi - North London Baddest (Tottenham)
Sir Does Hi-Fi - Champion of Tottenham
Sir George Hi-Fi from Tottenham (Cubies resident)
Seven Seals (Tottenham)
Nationwide of Tottenham
Ital Force (Tottenham)
Tippa Sound (Tottenham)
The Mighty Youth Of Zion (Bruce Grove)
Count Shelley - Heavyweight Champion of the North (Tottenham / Stoke Newington)
Sir KP's Hi-Fi - Stoke Newington Heavyweight Champion
Papa Eastman International (Stoke Newington)
The Mighty Prophets (Stoke Newington)
Imperial Zion (Stoke Newington)
Emporer (Stoke Newington)
Jah Spirit (Stoke Newington)
Sir Fray Hi-Fi (Dalston)
Serge Hi-Fi of Dalston (Four Aces / Cubies resident)
Liberator Esq (Dalston)
Joshua Hi-Fi - Kingsland Entertainer
North Star Hi-Fi (Highbury/lslington)
Kendra the Young Lion (Archway)
Sir Bigga the President (Papa B) of Hornsey
Mighty Intrepid Sound of Finsbury Park
Roots Rocker (Finsbury Park)
Progressive Sound (Turnpike Lane)
Saxon (Wood Green)
Count Marshall from Edmonton
Count Cozie Cool the Trojan (Hanwell)
Tokyo the Monarch (Leyton)
Unitone of Leyton
Imperial Youth (Leyton)
Sir Wayne (Leyton)
Captain Ken Big Panasonic Sound - North London No.1 Musical Brain
His Majesty Jah Whitey - North London Humble Lion
Jah Tubby from North
Count Reggie Hi-Fi (North London)" source unknown.

Anyway with my limited Reggae knowledge i compiled a mix from the cache of vinyl:

Enjoy, Dérive.

Dérive

'One of the basic situationist practices is the dérive, a technique of rapid passage through varied ambiences. Dérives involve playful-constructive behaviour and awareness of psychogeographical effects, and are thus quite different from the classic notions of journey or stroll.' Guy de Bord.

The notion of the dérive is an essential part of the idea of Hackney Players Association. Well, we seemed to hook up with a common grounding theme of dancefloor music and had reached similar conclusions through very different paths. We are not exclusively Disco or Dub or House or Punk but an amalgamation of them all.

Come drift with us...
